‘1001 Titles,’ an initiative by the Sharjah-based Knowledge without Borders (KWB), has travelled to Italy to take part in a series of activities at the 54th edition of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, with the aim of opening up new channels of communication with international publishers and enhancing cross-cultural exchange.

 

On the sidelines of its participation in the fair, which takes place from April 3-6 in Bologna, 1001 Titles has organised a professional programme to engage six Emirati publishers with their counterparts from Brazil. The activity featured an introductory session on the importance of buying and selling copyrights and their role in promoting books. It also highlighted how effective communication strategies facilitate access to copyright.

 

1001 Titles organised a tour at the fair where its delegation, along with representatives from Emirati and Brazilian publishers, toured its various sections and stands. Several meetings and gatherings were conducted with cultural and educational institutions, during which the representatives discussed the importance of applying contemporary practices in the children’s publishing industry.

 

Talking about their participation at the fair, Rashid Al Kous, General Manager of KWB, said: “Our involvement with the Bologna Children's Book Fair forms part of a collective of efforts undertaken by cultural institutions in the UAE in general and Sharjah in particular to unite cultural and humanitarian visions and support intellectual dialogue, thus strengthening the UAE’s stature as a bridge for cross-cultural communication that connects the world.”

 

He added: "The creative Latin American literary experience stands as one of the cornerstones of global culture, as it has enriched the world with renowned names in novels, short stories, theatre and poetry. Latin American literature has gained widespread popularity in the Arab world and was one of a number of influencers on the Arab cultural movement. Opening up the UAE’s and Sharjah’s publishing scenes to the Latin sphere will form a unique and rich addition to Arab publishers, writers and readers."

 

The 1001 Titles initiative made the best use of the professional programme to familiarise Brazilian publishers with the unique cultural experience that is being spearheaded by Sharjah. It also highlighted the honour bestowed by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, on local and international literary and intellectual figures. Brazilian publishers were introduced to the experiences of KWB and 1001 Titles and the role each of them plays in promoting books and a culture of reading in Emirati society.

 

The six Emirati publishers participating alongside 1001 Titles initiative at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair are Ali Al Shaali, Director of Al Hudhud Publishing House; Salha Ghabish, Founder of the Sadeeqat Publishing House; Fatima Al Buraiki, owner of Sama Publishing; Nouh Al Hammadi, owner of Zajil Publishing House; Ali Abdul Qader, Director of the Arab Reader’s Centre, and Al Yazia Khalifa, Director of Al Falak Publishing House.

 

1001 Titles was launched by KWB in February 2016 with the aim of releasing 1001 Emirati books in Arabic to enhance knowledge and intellectual production in the UAE and ensure the sustainability of the publishing industry in the UAE and abroad. It aims to support Emirati authors and encourage them to write more books, as well as support Emirati publishers and ensure their ability to compete in the publishing sector.
